I am of the opinion that if Stewart Downing was right footed, he would never have left Middlesbrough. Downing’s emergence coincided with England’s desperate search for a left footed winger, which saw the Liverpool man called up to the England squad on numerous occasions. A decent spell at Villa convinced Liverpool to splash out £20 million to bring him to Anfield, where it’s fair to say he has struggled since. He is currently being kept out of the team by 17-year-old Raheem Sterling and 18-year-old Suso, a sign that perhaps his luck has just about run out.
