The traditional big teams in England have done a fairly good job of keeping a low profile in terms of spend for much of the January transfer window. Each of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea were involved in January purchases, but all of them with the exception of United were out of necessity.
What has been interesting is that so many of the bigger clubs chose to ignore the obvious bargains on offer that have been snapped up by others in the Premier League. For the most part, these are proven players with international experience. When many clubs are choosing to pay closer attention to their finances as Financial Fair Play comes into action, there’s little excuse for clubs in need of additions overlooking the quality that was made available.
