Tom Hanks/Aston Villa – At the première for his War in London film, Tom Hanks was seen bizarrely sporting an Aston Villa scarf on the red carpet. It hadn’t been given to him by an eager Villa fan looking to attract more American investment though, as in fact Hanks had earlier declared his love for the East Midlands club. The star of Toy Story told people: “I fell in love with Aston Villa because I thought the name sounded like an island off Sardinia. Lovely place to go. I am going to go on holiday to Aston Villa. We’ll take the kids, play on the beach, get a lovely cabana overlooking the football field.” Apart from this minor geographical hiccup, he also told Randy Lerner he was best off replacing Gerard Houllier with Brian Clough. Which, in fairness, was sound advice a few decades ago.
