Defending Barca obviously is not easy but their a formula that has been proven to work. Arsenal have done it, Madrid did it in the Copa del Rey, and Rubin Kazan have done it a couple times. Actually it's pretty simple, in fact the mistake most teams make is sit back and defend. The key is to be aggressive and not be afraid to take risks. For example, in the 1st leg of Arsenal v Barca, Koscielny had an incredible match. Mainly down to not being afraid to chase Messi and be aggressive in timing his tackles. He trusted that if he got out of position someone else filled the gap. Saying all that, beating Barca is easily one of the most difficult things in the world to accomplish.

I don't think anyone in football struggles with understanding a "false nine" but few sides have the players to utilise it-plus when two sides using it meet the better technical side will ALWAYS win out.

It's the same as it ever was-most sides don;t have the ability per man that Barca do so only Real, or maybe City, can hope to replicate it successfully in future.

The hope for teams like Utd, Chelsea et al is more with the nous of fergie or AVB's rotational midfield tactics which may, or may not, also include a deeper delving striker or not. It all depends on who's at your club, simple as that, than show the best tactics for THOSE players. No one formation will EVEr be an answer for everyone-how could it ever BE?
