Arsenal needed a response. A response of any kind would have done, but fans wanted a win. Chelsea, too, in fact needed to make a statement following an inconsistent past few weeks. Going into the Christmas schedule, neither team could afford to win.

What the neutrals wanted was an opportunity to gauge what type of Arsenal this was. Were they genuinely good enough to see out the season as title contenders, or were they just slightly better than what’s been on offer in recent seasons? Neither question was really answered, and you feel that sits quite well with Arsene Wenger.

As for Jose Mourinho, a point away to a title rival with a team who are underperforming will be seen as a point gained rather than two dropped.
