Name: Xherdan Shaqiri
Club: Bayern Munich
International Caps: 33
Position: Wide midfielder
Brendan Rodgers looks keen to add even more dynamism into Liverpool’s frightening attack force, and in recent weeks he has been heavily linked with an interest in Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri. Nicknamed ‘the Alpine Messi’, the 22-year-old is the lifeblood of Switzerland’s attack, and he has already amassed 33 caps for his country.
Despite just standing at five-foot-six, Shaqiri is a box of tricks. He is blessed with extreme power in his stocky frame. His pace and flair cause endless nightmares for opposition full-backs. His competence with both feet makes him an unpredictable foe, while also boasting a ferocious shot. Shaqiri also possesses great vision, and is the Swiss national side’s go-to-guy to fashion out goalscoring opportunities.
For Bayern, he has played 65 times across all competitions in his two-year spell, but he has never really nailed down a regular place in the starting line-up. Having to make do with irregular playing time isn’t sufficient for a player of Shaqiri’s calibre, and Rodgers looks keen to add the Swiss youngster for a reported fee of £15 million.
If the Swiss national side harbour hopes of causing any upsets this summer, much pressure will fall on Shaqiri’s shoulders. They find themselves in a group in which they would seriously hope to progress. Gain some momentum, and who knows how far their journey will take them. One thing we do know though, is that Shaqiri will be central to it.
