‘Too big for your boots’:

Definition: To act in a conceited manner or boast an exaggerated sense of their own importance.

That’s every professional footballer I hear you cry! Maybe so, but in my eyes these ten colourful characters go beyond the normal realms of egotistical behaviour.

Whether it’s a pitchside tantrum, childish retort or an arrogant rant in the national press, certain players fail to understand that they can never be bigger than their club. In their minds the phrase, ‘football is the beautiful game’, refers only to them.
