There is no doubt that after a promising spell at the turn of the year, Liverpool’s end to the 2014/15 season will have the Anfield club’s fans scratching their heads.

Brendan Rodgers’ switch to a three-man defence threatened to propel the Reds into a top four position, but just as the Merseysiders were looking poised to strike, everything went wrong.

Inconsistent domestic form ended the chance of Champions League qualification, while the concession of nine goals in the team’s final two league games against the modest opposition of Crystal Palace and Stoke robbed departing legend Steven Gerrard of a fitting send-off.

With the Reds also bottling the chance to reach the FA Cup final by losing against Aston Villa at the penultimate hurdle, it is fair to say that it has been a campaign to forget for the Kop.

Question marks over Rodgers’ ability to lead the club back to the glory days have understandably been raised in recent times, with the former Swansea gaffer's record in the transfer market also being scrutinised.

Despite the underwhelming nature of Liverpool’s conclusion to 2014-15, here are three reasons why Rodgers deserves more time in the Anfield hot seat.

Progression

Rodgers1

Although this season has been a step sideways in terms of the progression of the football club, the state that it is in now compared to when Rodgers took over is much more favourable.

Over three seasons at Anfield, the Northern Irish manager has made Liverpool competitive and able to beat any other side in the division on their day.

Consistency may well have been missing for prolonged periods in 2014-15, but compared to the days when Kenny Dalglish was managing the club, the Reds are in a much better situation.

Getting the best of a host of young stars

STerling Raheem

There is no doubting that the signings of Fabio Borini, Mario Balotelli, Iago Aspas and a handful of others have been nothing short of disastrous - but every manager in world football has made blunders in the transfer market at some point.

Forgetting the flops, Rodgers has brought arguably the team’s best players to the club or got the best out of those who were floundering before he arrived.

The ex-Swansea man has developed the likes of Emre Can, Philippe Coutinho, Adam Lallana, Simon Mignolet and Daniel Sturridge, while getting the best from Jordan Henderson and blooding Raheem Sterling and Jordon Ibe.

This should not be overlooked.

Tactical versatility

Rodgers

Since taking over in the Anfield hot seat, the Northern Irishman has adopted a number of different formations and systems - with nearly all of them having periods of success at one point or another.

The bravery to change to a three-man defence should be commended, while Rodgers has tinkered with his tactics to successfully unleash the likes of Luis Suarez, Sterling and Coutinho over the years.

Breaking into the top four this season was always going to difficult given the investment and quality of others, but Rodgers has the faith of the players and knows the club.

With a couple of good signings and settling on a formation that plays to the team’s strengths, there is no reason why Liverpool can’t be back amongst English football’s elite next season under Rodgers' guidance.
