The biggest football story of the weekend should be Lionel Messi’s record-breaking performance against Real Betis, equalling and then surpassing Gerd Muller’s 85 goals in a calendar year. But La Liga wasn’t done with just one performance of note: Falcao became the 22nd player in La Liga history to score five goals in a match, also becoming the first Atletico Madrid player to do so.

Those are the big names, one of which will continue to see his name linked to those in the Premier League. But away from Madrid and Barcelona, there is plenty of quality available for which English clubs can significantly strengthen. It’s not always about finding the biggest names who draw the most attention, but it’s also about finding the right name, regardless of price. Premier League clubs want to play attractive football and follow the example set by those in Spain. For the most part, these players can be picked up for bargain fees, and there’s certainly plenty of excitement about the quality of talent throughout La Liga.
