The Swiss centre back has long been out of favour at Arsenal with the 25 year old failing to establish himself a starting position. He does boast an abundance of experience with 38 international caps and with age on his side, this deal could suit both teams. The Gunners are keen to remove him from the wage bill and there has been a desperate need for cover in the middle of defence at St James’s Park. Now that Steven Taylor is out till February and with James Perch being the only other viable option than Williamson or Coloccini, reinforcing this area seems essential. The reported £3 million asking price could make the player an affordable yet viable option.
