Top Ten Premier League Games of All-Time

CollymoreDuring the 18 seasons of Premiership football in England there have been a number of classic encounters that will last long in fans’ memories. The FA Premier League has been set alight by many encounters involving a selection of Premiership teams. These include classic Premiership games between Liverpool and Newcastle, Tottenham and Arsenal and the Manchester derby which have all produced memorable Premier League encounters. Here is a run down of the Top Ten FA Premier League matches to date:

10: Chelsea 2-4 Sunderland (2001) – Sunderland blew Chelsea away with a tremendous second half performance. After trailing 2-1 at half time at Stamford Bridge, second half goals from Don Hutchinson, Gavin McCann and fired the Black Cats to victory in this Premier League encounter.

9: Newcastle 4-3 Leicester (1997) – Newcastle completed a marvellous comeback after trailing 3-1 with 14 minutes to go at St James’ Park. A Premier League upset was on the cards before a stunning three kick led to a hat trick in the last 14 minutes by Newcastle hero and the Magpies stole the points.

8: Liverpool 3-3 Manchester United (1994) – United went 3 up in the first 24 minutes in this Premiership fixture at Anfield, before a brace from Nigel Clough and a header in front of the Kop earned a point for Liverpool and secured a great comeback.

7: Leeds 3-4 Newcastle (2001) – Newcastle were 3-1 behind in this classic Premiership encounter at Elland Road after goals from Lee Bowyer, Mark Viduka and Ian Harte. But a Robbie Elliot header, an penalty and a last minute winner gave Newcastle all 3 points.

6: Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle (1997) – This was the second classic Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Newcastle, and the second time that the Reds prevailed in a 4-3 classic. Goals from Steve McManaman, Patrick Berger, and a brace for sent the Anfield fans home happy in another 7 goal thriller.

5: West Ham 5-4 Bradford (2000) – Hammers’ midfielder scored the winner and secured victory in a 9 goal thriller to complete a remarkable turnaround for West Ham, who trailed Bradford 4-2 with 25 minutes left at Upton Park.

4: Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal (2009) – A remarkable 4 goal haul by Russian midfielder earned a point for Arsenal at Anfield, but it was Liverpool midfielder Yossi Benayoun who snatched a draw for the Reds as he scrambled the ball home during injury-time.

3: Manchester United 4-3 Manchester City (2009) – Enthralling Premiership derby this season when City came back from 3-1 down through 2 goals from Welsh striker Craig Bellamy and looked to have secured a draw, before scored a dramatic injury-time winner.

2: Arsenal 4-4 Tottenham (2008)’s injury-time equaliser was one of two Spurs goals in the dying moments to give new boss Harry Redknapp a stunning point at the Emirates Stadium, in a match that also featured an audacious strike from ex-Gunner David Bentley in the first half.

1: Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle (1996) – The first of two classic Premiership fixtures between these two teams, which saw score a last minute winner and dent Newcastle’s Premiership title bid. Both teams led during a pulsating game but Collymore’s strike delivered a fatal blow to Kevin Keegan’s team.

So the original Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle encounter has topped the list, and remains one of the most memorable games of football in England ever. I focused on Premier League games which featured a late winner or equaliser, as they generally have the most excitement and remained thrilling right to the end. But are there any other Premiership games that you think deserve recognition and should go down as one of the greatest Premier League matches of all-time?

What about Spurs 3 – 5 Man Utd. Spurs blew Utd away in the first half and went 3-0 up. In the 2nd half, Utd played some of the most sublime football even seen in 45 minutes of football to score 5.

Liverpool 3 Mark Viduka 4. As I remember Leeds couldn’t even fill the bench and lost Woodgate to injury in the first half, missing half the first team against a rampaging Liverpool Viduka scored four belters in the best football match I have ever seen
