Whether it’s through injury, fractured relations with the manager or a younger, better model taking your place, some players find themselves trapped in the reserves. Their predicament is usually the result of a failed transfer; having arrived at the club amongst much fanfare one mistake can ensure first-team football is a thing of the past.

The loan market can provide a welcome reprieve but unless a future fee is agreed, players usually return to their club and fall effortlessly back down the pecking order. With the new season rapidly approaching I have compiled a list of those who could suffer the same fate unless they secure a move away.
