Utd Stuck In 1st Gear!

Micheal McKenna looks at Man Utd workmanlike start to the season and feels it is only a matter of time before they come to life in front of goal…lord help the rest of the Premiership when they do.

Where is the Manchester United of last season, scoring goals for fun, winning games before half time? This was the season we were meant to take all four competitions by storm and already we find ourselves out of one, albeit the Carling Cup, the lesser of the four.

Almost £80 million was spent over the summer on players, mainly attack minded. Even with Owen Hargreaves, we bought him to free up the likes of Scholes, Giggs and Ronaldo to become freer in their play safe in the knowledge Hargreaves is there to clean up their mistakes.

Why is Man Utd not scoring? Is it because the new players haven’t clicked yet, or is it because every team that plays United come to keep the score to a minimum?

Take the first game of the league season against Reading. For any aspiring bricklayers out there; watch the video of that game again because that’s how you build a brick wall. Chelsea didn’t have them sort of problems in the first year they were champions, they steamrolled the Premiership the following year as well so what has happened to Utd?

Don’t get me wrong here I appreciate we are still grinding out results but I believe that you should win playing with a bit of swagger and the kind of style that all Utd fans have become accustomed…nicking 1-0s doesn’t exactly get the heart pulses racing and given our lack of goals it is good job Utd have the best defensive duo in the Premiership in Vidic and Ferdinand.

It is early days in the Premiership, and in my opinion the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal need to be afraid. Utd haven’t even got out of 1st gear yet and when the likes of Tevez, Nani and Anderson settle into our system alongside the likes of Rooney and Ronaldo then the goals will no doubt come.

Sir Alex is building something special here and when it finally gels; maybe Utd fans can start dreaming of 1999 all over again.
