Kieran Trippier was one of the shining lights in Burnley’s campaign last season, despite relegation.

Trippier continued his excellent form from the Clarets promotion season and provided and outlet as he overlapped down the right hand side whilst looking comfortable with the defensive requirements of the Premier League.

The ex-Burnley man was highly sought after at the beginning of this summer and interest was reported to several clubs including Stoke and Southampton. His eventual decision to join Tottenham seems ambitious initially, but may well act as a block against his potential development.

Europa League football could provide the chance for Trippier to get regular minutes and progress in that competition is likely to be the full-back’s best chance of proving himself. The opportunity to play with higher quality players should give Trippier greater room to show his expansive attacking game compared to the low block of Burnley.

However, Trippier is moving into the position currently held by Kyle Walker. Trippier has moved with the knowledge he is coming in as a back-up to Walker and, despite injury problems, Walker is going to remain as first-choice for some years to come.

As appearances go, Trippier will be fortunate to make 10 league starts unless Walker is to suffer with more injuries and looks set to follow the steps of Ben Davies in stunting his development with a move to White Hart Lane.

While Davies left a stable platform for development at Swansea, Trippier would have been far more suited to a move to the Britannia. Stoke searching for a right-back and Trippier would have fitted the bill perfectly whilst giving the former Claret more appearances throughout the season.

Davies’ nine Premier League starts should spell a worrying pattern for Trippier and the potential for both of them can only be fulfilled with a regular starting berth, not sitting on the bench at a team who aren’t in the Champions League.

At 24, Trippier is 2 years senior of Davies and both need to be playing regularly and the only way this should be sacrificed would be if they were moving for the chance of Champions League football. Development would have been more successful at Swansea or Stoke and a move for trophies or ambition would have only been justifiable if the two of them managed to get a move to a top four team.

Although the two young full-backs could have made better career decisions, Tottenham have made two very shrewd signings. Walker, Rose, Trippier and Davies provide four great options in the full-back positions and signing Trippier for under £4 million is a steal in the current market.

The greater threat to his place brought out the best form of Danny Rose last season and Pochettino will be hoping that the signing of Trippier does the same for Kyle Walker.
