Kostas Manolas is close to a £6million move to Arsenal, with reports circulating that the Greek defender is currently undergoing a medical in London, Independent reports.
Arsenal captain Thomas Vermaelen made the £15million move to Barcelona recently, and the Gunners see Manolas as the perfect replacement.
Olympiakos accepted an £6million bid from Arsenal after manager Arsene Wenger earlier stated he was looking to bring in a defender before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.
“Vermaelen behaved outstandingly last year – I am grateful for him and I wish him very well,” Wenger said.
“If I can find another centre-back I will do it.”
Manolas will be the Gunners’ third defensive signing this summer, after purchasing Calum Chambers from Southampton and Mathieu Debuchy from Newcastle United.
Arsenal will also welcome back World Cup winner Per Mertesacker next weekend, but with only the German and Laurent Koscielny as first choice centre-backs, the capture of Manolas will greatly benefit the Gunners as they challenge domestically and in Europe this season.
