Tottenham’s refusal to sell Etienne Capoue to Napoli is set to spark a transfer battle involving Arsenal and Manchester United for Monaco midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia, according to the Express.
Rafael Benitez is desperate to bring a defensive midfielder to Napoli, and having missed out on Lyon’s Maxime Gonalons, had attempted to lure Capoue from White Hart Lane.
However Tottenham were quick to reject their £9million offer for the 25-year-old, who they only signed themselves for the same fee last August.
Tim Sherwood is said to have demanded that any deal include Napoli forward Goran Pandev, but the Italians were reluctant to do business.
Benitez has been forced to turn his attentions elsewhere again, and Monaco’s Kondogbia is now thought to be his number one target.
Kondogbia was heavily linked with both Manchester United and Arsenal, before completing his move to the French club in the summer for a fee of £16.5million.
But the 20-year-old has struggled to make much of an impression, and reports in France suggest Monaco may be open to offers.
Napoli are understood to have already made contact over a possible transfer, in a move which could see both Arsenal and Manchester United reignite their interest in a player they were disappointed to miss out on in the summer.
