Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has fuelled reports that he is hoping to sign Schalke playmaker Julian Draxler in the January transfer window, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

The Gunners have been keeping a close eye on the German international for months now and appear ready to make a bid, coinciding with the long term injury picked up by winger Theo Walcott.

Wenger has money to spend this month and made a striker his main aim, although Draxler’s versatility is a major factor in the interest from the North London club who may have to cough up in excess of £30million for the Schalke man.

“I am curious as well, of course I’m curious it’s my nature,” said Wenger.

“But the transfer period lasts until the 31st of January. Are we close to signing anybody? At the moment I would say no.

“It’s not about German; it’s about talent and quality.

“At the moment the quality is produced in Germany so we are of course interested where the talent is and where the good education of the players is. At the moment Germany produces top level players.”
