Arsenal have joined Chelsea and Real Madrid in the race to sign Benfica midfielder Nemanja Matic, according to talkSPORT.

The Serbian has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League this month, having previously been let go by Chelsea as part of the deal which saw David Luiz make the move to Stamford Bridge.

Matic has gone on to establish himself as one of the best holding midfielders in Europe whilst in Portugal, and the Gunners are understood to have made the first move to sign him.

Arsenal are understood to have made contact with the players agent, Dejan Mitrovic, over the prospect of a possible switch to the Emirates.

Jose Mourinho had previously been heavily linked with a move for the 25-year-old Serbian, as he looks to reshape the centre of his midfield.

However, reports suggest Mourinho has turned his attentions to Inter Milan midfielder Fredy Gaurin, who is said to be available at a cheaper price.

Manchester City remain in the market for new midfield options, with Manuel Pellegrini remaining unconvinced by Javi Garcia.

Matic would represent an upgrade on the Spaniard who joined the club in the summer of 2012, as City look to reclaim the title off rivals Manchester United.
