Arsenal are looking for a cash plus either Chris Smalling or Phil Jones deal in order for Vermaelen to join Manchester United, Mirror reports.
The Belgian defender is set for a move away from the Emirates but Gunners manager Arsene Wenger is keen to bring in an adequate replacement.
Man United have had a £10million bid for Vermaelen recently rejected as Wenger looks to bring one of either Phil Jones or Chris Smalling to replace the want-away centre-back.
Both Jones and Smalling were expected to stay at Old Trafford after the departures of veteran duo Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, but could be used to sweeten Vermaelen’s transfer to Manchester.
Manager Louis van Gaal is confident of securing the deal with the 28-year-old extremely desperate to join the Red Devils.
Wenger was also interested in Man United midfielder Tom Cleverley, but seems to have shifted his attentions to defensive cover for first-choice pairing Per Mertesacker and Laurent Kolscielny.
The Gunners are however set to complete the £3million signing of Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina as competition for number one Wojciech Szczesny.
