Arsenal have rejected the offer from Manchester United in their attempt to sign Thomas Vermaelen and could even offer their club captain a new contract, Mirror reports.
The side are believed to want to keep the Belgium centre-back in the squad and would expect Louis van Gaal to pay a lot more in order to begin negotiations.
Arsene Wenger is also considering to offer Vermaelen a new deal in order to keep him at the Emirates as he only has one year remaining on his current deal.
Should the move be accepted, the Gunners boss may want to add a player into the deal as the Frenchman is already considering a swoop for either Tom Cleverley or Luis Nani from the Red Devils.
The 28-year-old defender is regarded as a backup to the current defensive pairing of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, so Wenger may need to keep him happy or risk losing him.
Serie A side Napoli was also hinted at a move but later pulled out as they believed their transfer target was already set for a move to Old Trafford.
