In a tightly contested match that blew up in the final minutes of injury time, Argentina came out the happier side despite not producing their best display. Switzerland looked the more dangerous during the first half as they saw Josip Drmic miss one of the best opportunities of the match when his unnecessary chip landed straight into Sergio Romero’s grasp.
The second half saw the Argentines come out with intent, upping their game with Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria making highly convincing runs, but seeing their final ball missing the mark. After 90 minutes, the Swiss players took the game really slowly hoping to battle in out with a penalty shootout. However, a costly mistake in the midfield saw Messi break free on the counter, setting a perfect pass to Di Maria who sent the ball into the back of the net with two minutes remaining. In the final few minutes, the European side went all out with Blerim Dzemaili striking the post, but the match in heartbreak for his side.
Much like the earlier match between Argentina and Switzerland, this match was also decided in extra time as the Belgians booked their place in the quarter finals. Tim Howard produces a huge amount of stunning saves to deny Belgium time and time again, ensuring that there were no winners in the first 90 minutes. The European side took the game to the US as they gave their opponents the scare on a variety of occasions.
Divock Origi had a great game, but saw all his chances pushed away by an on-form Howard throughout the match. Kevin De Bruyne finally gave Belgium the lead in the three minutes into extra time before substitute Romelu Lukaku looked to have secured victory by notching his nation’s second of the game 12 minutes later. USA fought back bravely with Julian Green pulling one back, but as the scoreline showed, that was just not enough.
