Arsenal are set to re-open talks for Sporting Lisbon star William Carvalho in January, after the Portuguese rejected the club’s latest contract offer, Metro reports.
Carvalho has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates all summer, with the Gunners making three bids including one on deadline day for the highly-rated defensive midfielder.
Sporting were only willing to sell the 22-year-old if his £35million release clause could be matched, but a week prior to the transfer deadline, his asking price was decreased to £24million.
The two clubs were still unable to agree on a deal, but despite failed negotiations the Gunners will push to sign the Portugal international during the January window after the news that Carvalho rejected Sporting’s new contract offer.
According to reports, the new deal consists of his release clause being bumped up to £40million, which could essentially deter the Gunners from making a move.
Carvalho has therefore chosen not to sign the offer, with his heart already set in playing at the Emirates next season.
