Everton maintained their pursuit of a Champions League place with a Leighton Baines 92nd minute penalty to draw 1-1 with Stoke at the Britannia stadium.
In what was a physical affair Stoke simply couldn’t hold on as a share of the spoils seemed a fair result in the end. The Potters took the lead in the 49th minute through Oussama Assaidi, as he collected the ball to strike home after John Stones failed to clear his lines.
The on loan Liverpool needed no invitation to hit the ball in the back of net on 49 minutes having been a constant threat all afternoon.
Despite Everton having the majority of the possession they couldn’t really assert themselves despite Kevin Mirallas hitting the crossbar with a fine effort.
The pressure from the Toffees though began to tell in the second period and inevitably they got the breakthrough they were after when Jermaine Pennant upended Leon Osman in the box.
Baines no mistake from six yards to show the Toffees have grown a real resolve under Roberto Martinez. Stoke have shown at home that they are no rollovers too and are unbeaten in seven at the Britannia stadium. This result should see both sides get a step closer to their targets of survival and European football this season.
