Barcelona have agreed a fee of £15million with Arsenal to sign Thomas Vermaelen, according to Sky Sports.
The Belgian defender has been linked with a move away from the Emirates after losing his regular first team place last season, and now looks set to move to the Nou Camp subject to passing a medical.
Manchester United have also been keen to sign the Arsenal club captain, but the Gunners were reluctant to sell to a domestic rival.
Louis van Gaal had also looked to tempt Arsenal into a deal with a player-plus-cash offer, but ended their interest on Friday when Wenger confirmed the club were not interested.
Vermaelen has been at Arsenal since 2009, and will vacate his role of club captain should the deal go through as expected.
Arsene Wenger opted for the partnership of Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker as first choice last season, and will now look to add a new centre back ahead of the new season.
Liverpool’s vice-captain Daniel Agger has been linked with a move to the Emirates as well as Barcelona, and it remains to be seen whether this deal will have a knock-on effect.
