Barcelona striker Lionel Messi has had his contract adjusted to make him the highest paid player in the world, as reported by Daily Mirror.

The Argentinean has been rumoured to be unhappy this season at the Nou Camp and a move away from Spain has been mentioned with Manchester City and PSG eagerly anticipating any advances.

However that seems to be dead as Messi has his wish of becoming the highest paid player in the world, surpassing long term rival Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 26 year old is now reportedly earning £16.5million a year from the Catalan club, extending his stay until 2019.

A club statement read – “FC Barcelona has reached an agreement to adjust the terms in the contract binding Leo Messi to the club as a professional first team player.

“The revised and updated contract will be signed over the next few days.”

Barcelona host Atletico Madrid this evening in a winner takes all title clash, although a draw would see the La Liga trophy heading back to Madrid.
