Chelsea and Manchester City are ready to battle Barcelona for the signature of Villarreal’s star centre back Mateo Musacchio, according to the Daily Express.
Villarreal have been the surprise package of the season in Spain, and the form of Musacchio has been integral to their rise up the table, with the 23-year-old having started every one of their 16 league games this season.
He has helped his side to five clean sheets so far this season, and has begun to attract attention from some of Europe’s finest clubs.
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has hinted he may have to start shutting up shop as he cannot rely on his strikers to score the goals to win them games, and may be forced to enter the transfer market in January for a new defender.
Another example of Chelsea’s problems was evident on Tuesday night, as his side were knocked out of the Capital One Cup quarter final at Sunderland.
Demba Ba and Samuel Eto’o both missed good opportunities to kill the game for the Blues, and Sunderland were able to force extra time and eventually win the tie.
Mourinho has also been linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Andrea Ranocchia in January.
Manchester City and Barcelona have also registered an interest in Musacchio, and both may well make January offers.
However Musacchio – who has been capped twice by Argentina – may well stay and see if Villarreal can make a push for the Champions League in the second half of the season before deciding his future.
