Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has blasted his critics as ‘stupid’ despite their Capital One Cup exit to Stoke City on Tuesday, according to reports from the Mirror.

The Blues crashed out of the competition after a 1-1 scoreline on penalties to the Potters, with last season’s PFA Player of the Year Eden Hazard missing the decisive shot.

The defeat is another poor result in their extremely miserable start to the season, but despite being knocked out in the fourth round, Mourinho had no bad word to say about his players.

He said: "What some people write and say is really bad for the players.

"What the players did tonight is face some people that write and speak, and said: "You are stupid".'

"Maybe they think my players are like them when they were players. My players don't do that, they tried everything.

"If anyone saw the second half the other day, playing with 10 men the way they did, it's a lack of respect for the players.

"It's difficult. It's more difficult when you play bad & lose than play well and lose. We go with sadness but a positive feeling.

"We played so well. This first half could finish the game at half-time. Then second half, goal, and they keep going.

"A few months ago I won a few matches and I was champion. People were saying there are things more important than results. Now, people say results are the most important thing. It's a contradiction."

It has been reported that this weekend’s clash against Liverpool may make or break Mourinho’s career at Stamford Bridge, as another loss would see ‘The Special One’ sacked only a few months after winning the Premier League title.

However, sacking Mourinho will come at a cost, with owner Roman Abramovich having to pay the former Real Madrid boss around £30million in compensation.
