Jose Mourinho wants to bring Real Madrid youngster Raphael Varane to Chelsea as a back up to John Terry, Express reports.

The 21-year-old defender has failed to secure a place in his team’s back line with Pepe and Sergio Ramos having built a strong partnership that has booked the pair a place in this year’s UEFA Champions League final.

However, with Pepe’s future in doubt and continued interest from Manchester City, the Spanish giants could find it hard to let go of their defensive prospect.

Having worked together at his time in Madrid, Mourinho could make a move for the French defender – who has a £165m buy-out clause in his contract – but a reduced transfer fee could be negotiated based on the situation of their current central defensive pairing.

Varane’s move to England could be made easier if Carlo Ancelotti’s pursuit of Arsenal’s Laurent Koscielny is successful, which will free up space for Pepe to make a move.

Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has shown massive interest in the Portuguese and if Ancelotti is to be ready in parting ways with his defender, the City boss will be the first one to make an offer.
