The Spanish playmaker has not been first choice for Jose Mourinho in the Premier League so far this season although recent performances while Oscar is out injured have impressed.
Mata has been in and out of the Spain squad too and with the obvious wealth of quality available to the current World champions, his place in Brazil next summer will be in doubt if he isn’t a regular at Stamford Bridge.
‘You always think about it [the World Cup], albeit unconsciously because you have to think about the next [Chelsea] game,” Mata said.
“But you know you have to have a good season to go there.’
‘After winning the first one, for me it would be amazing to go to my second World Cup in Brazil, which is a great football country. It would be amazing for me to win trophies with Chelsea and afterwards to go to the World Cup.’
