Chelsea’s Ashley Cole has said he would like to see the club sign Southampton’s Luke Shaw in January, despite the fact his arrival would have an impact on his first team chances, reports the Guardian.
Cole started the Boxing Day victory over Swansea, but has frequently found himself behind Cesar Azpilicueta in the pecking order this season.
It remains unclear as to whether Cole will stay at Stamford Bridge much longer, with his contract set to expire in the summer.
A possible move to the MLS has been mentioned, whilst Premier League rivals Liverpool and Tottenham have also recently seen their names linked.
Chelsea are said to be hunting a long term replacement for the England man, and 18-year-old Shaw has been mentioned as a possible candidate.
Cole was asked on Twitter how he felt about the club wanting to buy Shaw and replied: “hope to see him there to be honest”.
The comments are unlikely to go down well with Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino, who has previously insisted he will not be selling Shaw in January.
“It is a very clear situation,” he said this week. “The player wants to stay, the club is not willing to sell.”
