Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi has claimed he would have ‘committed suicide’ by now if he had completed a transfer to Manchester United in the summer, according to the Metro.
The Premier League Champions were linked with a move for the Italian during the summer, but a £20million deal could not be agreed.
And that looks as though it was for the best, with De Rossi claiming he would have ended up killing himself at Old Trafford.
‘It was a good thing that I didn’t go to Manchester, now I would have committed suicide,’ he told Corriere Dello Sport.
De Rossi claims the reason for his sadness would have been the idea of having unfinished business with Roma, had he completed a move away.
The 30-year-old fell out with the fans last season, but has since returned to form and is now considered a crucial part of Rudi Garcia’s side.
‘Last summer I didn’t feel comfortable, I didn’t recognise myself in the relationship with my team-mates and with the fans.’
David Moyes is unlikely to take too kindly to the comments made by De Rossi, which insinuate the teams poor form this season would have proved a factor, as he was also heavily linked with Chelsea.
Manchester United lost their sixth game of the Premier League season at home to Tottenham on New Years Day, and currently trail league leaders Arsenal by 11 points.
