Flying Everton winger Bryan Oviedo suffered a double leg fracture in the Toffees FA Cup victory over Stevenage last night, as reported by BBC Sport.
The Costa Rican international is now set to miss the World Cup, in which he would have been a key man for his nation in a group including England and Italy and shots from the game evidently show the horrific injury.
Oviedo has been influential for the Merseyside club so far this season, filling in at left back when Leighton Baines was absent and now on the left of midfield and an innocuous challenge left a mark that his own team mates could not bare to see.
The Toffees stormed to a comfortable 4-0 win against their League One opposition and will be in the hat for the Fifth Round today, but boss Roberto Martinez was giving his full attention to his stricken star after the game.
“A real negative today is the unfortunate incident and we need to give Bryan as much support as we can now,” Martinez told BT Sport
“He’s had a terrific season and I’ve been very impressed with him. He’s an important player in the group and he deserves a speedy recovery.
“The injury to Bryan affected everyone. Those type of injuries leave a sick taste.”
