Roberto Martinez looks to have won the race to sign free-agent Gareth Barry, with the Daily Mirror reporting that Everton are to announce the arrival of the midfielder within the next 48 hours.

The 33-year-old has agreed a three-year contract with the Toffees, having spent last season on the loan with the Merseyside club from Manchester City, making 32 Premier League appearances and notching three goals in the process.

Barry, who joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2009, had several other offers, most notably from Everton’s Premier League rivals West Ham and new Major League Soccer side New York City FC.

After securing Barry for the £2.5million that was agreed as part of the initial loan, Martinez will now focus his efforts on trying to bring Chelsea’s £25million-rated Romelu Lukaku to Goodison Park on a permanent basis.
