Jermaine Pennant, who is now a free agent after playing out his contract with Stoke City, could be rescued by former manager Rafael Benitez and sign for Napoli, Mirror reports.
The former Liverpool winger is being monitored by Benitez, who managed him during his time at the club could make the free transfer move to join the Italian club that can provide him with Champions League football once again.
With Lorenzo Insigne’s future in doubt after being linked with Arsenal, Pennant is seen by the manager as a suitable replacement on the flanks should the Italian leave.
Benitez fully believes in the ability of the English star, both mentally and physically, and could easily be interested in making the move due to the fact that he is already searching for a club.
He previously had spells at Notts County, Arsenal, Birmingham, Liverpool, Real Zaragoza, and Stoke City, making 89 appearances for the Potters over the last four seasons.
The move for the 31-year-old may be considered shocking, but the current Napoli manager believes in his ability and would be open to having the opportunity to manage him again.
