Liverpool could have gone in a different direction five years ago if Frank de Boer had not rejected the chance to manage the club.

The Dutchman has revealed to the Daily Mail that he rebuffed the Merseyside outfit’s approach because he felt that he was not ready to make that step.

Instead, De Boer remained in charge of Ajax, where he guided the team to four consecutive Eredivisie titles before leaving the club last year.

The Reds ended up hiring then-Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers, who failed to win a trophy in his three-and-a-half-year spell, but his team came the closest in years to winning the Premier League title, eventually falling short to Manchester City.

De Boer has not had a smooth run since leaving Ajax. He was appointed Inter Milan manager in August, but lasted just 85 days following a run of four defeats in five Serie A games.

The Dutchman has been out of work since leaving the club in November, and he has revealed that he harbours an ambition to coach in the Premier League one day.

He told the Daily Mail:

"I would love to manage [in England] but the project has to be right. I told Liverpool I was honoured but I was only one year in at Ajax, it was too soon. I needed to achieve more, and I did."
