Fulham boss Martin Jol has claimed that central defender Brede Hangeland should sign a contract extension in the next few weeks.

The Cottagers have a whole host of players whose contracts are set to expire at the end of the season including Mark Schwarzer, Chris Baird, Mladen Petric and Hangeland.

Jol has confirmed that he has opened discussions with most of the out of contract players over a new deal and news could be imminent.

Hangeland has been stalling on a contract offer for over two months now and the 31-year-old could still leave the club for free at the end of the season.

The Norwegian has been a rock at the back since he joined in 2008 and is now leading the West London side out each week as captain.

One final big move in his career may tempt Hangeland away from Craven Cottage but Jol is confident that won’t happen.

"We are talking to a few players and Brede is one of them,” Jol told the Daily Mirror.

"We are talking, which is a positive thing, and he wants to stay here. Hopefully there will be news in the next couple of weeks."
