Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has been playing in discomfort due to a troublesome heel injury, his manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed.

The midfielder played in the Reds’ last two Premier League games against Manchester United and Swansea City after missing three fixtures with the injury.

It causes concern for the England international, who struggled with his heel last season, and while Klopp has insisted that it is not the same injury, he has admitted that it is similar.

The German coach told reporters:

"It is different - similar but still different. We know much more from last year about it. We don't train a lot in this period between the games so instead of running one day, when the players who have played 90 minutes are running for recovery, he is on the bike - that is maybe the only difference with what we do with him.

"The rest is how I said - you don't use the phrase 'bite on his teeth' (grit his teeth)? You know what it means, it is not the moment to feel nothing, he always feels a little bit, but he can cope with it.”

Liverpool will be hoping that Henderson’s issue does not become worse given that they have had a disappointing run.

The club slipped 10 points adrift of league leaders Chelsea after losing 3-2 to Swansea on Saturday, and they head into Wednesday’s EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Anfield one goal down to Southampton.

Considering that Liverpool have scored more goals in the league than any other team (51), they have only managed four goals in their last five matches in all competitions.

Klopp’s men have also conceded five in that run.
