Manchester United may be dealt a major blow in their chase for Feyenoord defender Stefan De Vrij after his club admitted that he prefers a switch to Lazio instead, Express reports.
The Dutch defender has been very impressive for the national team at the World Cup, scoring one goal in the process as he was believed to be following Louis van Gaal to Old Trafford.
A deal of about £7 million was already in place as the 22-year-old was moving closer to becoming a United player ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
However, Feyenoord’s sporting director revealed that De Vrij was never close to a switch to England with the player soon to be on his way to the Italian Serie A.
Igli Tare said: “Many things have been said and written about De Vrij and his transfer to United but this is not true.
“His agent has said clearly that he has never been to Manchester to meet with the English club. De Vrij’s will is to play in Lazio.”
