The former Blackburn Rovers stopper came under fire himself after some high profile mistakes, most notably in Croatia from a Gary Neville backpass, so he knows exactly what Hart is going through.
The City ‘keeper was at fault for two of Bayern Munich’s goals in midweek at the Etihad, just two of a number of high profile errors made so far this season.
Talk last season was that Hart could be the best goalkeeper in the world, but after consistent errors talk this week was that the 26 year old may be dropped by England and City.
“It’s a joke we’re even talking about it [Joe Hart being dropped by England]. It’s the old thing with English goalkeepers. You want to be careful what you wish for.
“If you look at the two other lads, yeah they’re very good goalkeepers, but they’ve only got one cap between them. It’s someone else you’re going to build up and then if they make a mistake they’ll get the same treatment.
“Look at David Seaman, David James, myself. We have a habit of witch-hunting English goalkeepers when we should actually be getting behind them.
“It’s strange because everybody in the country wants the national team to do well but we seem to take great pride in highlighting the faults of players and where they could fall down.
“We all need to get behind them. The press, the manager definitely is and the players are. It’s a bad time for him where he needs people around him.”
