A second-half goal from midfielder Phil Jones helped relieve the pressure on manager David Moyes and take Man Utd to a 1-0 win against Shakthar Donetsk in the Champions League.
However Donetsk were by no means outplayed on the night as several chances were squandered. Alex Teixeira and Fred both wasted chances early in the first-half, while for United Ashley Young was unable to put the ball in the net after chipping the Donetsk keeper. Wayne Rooney also spurned chances in front of goal, including a delicate chip of his own, and his strike partner Robin Van Persie also failed to find the target.
It was left up to Jones, 22 minutes from time, to bury United’s clearest chance of the night, when he controlled the ball on the edge of the area and struck it home. The win means that United go top of Group A and will avoid the big hitters in Europe when the draw is made on December 16.
Manager Reaction: David Moyes
“We didn’t play particularly well in the opening 30 minutes, we could have been fortunate still to be 0-0 but we missed a couple of chances just before half-time ourselves but we played much better in the second half,” he said.
“I thought there wasn’t much difference to the Everton and Newcastle games. Tonight we got the goal. In those other games, Everton and Newcastle got the goal. There wasn’t an awful lot of difference between them.”
