Harry Kane has told his Tottenham Hotspur teammates that they would be "stupid" to walk away from the club.

The North London outfit have done well to tie down the majority of their first-team stars to long-term contracts this season.

There is a sense that Mauricio Pochettino and his team are building towards success, particularly with the £750m stadium due to be built in time for the 2018-19 campaign.

In terms of matters on the pitch, Spurs are fighting for the Premier League title, but they face a battle as they currently sit third in the standings, nine points adrift of leaders Chelsea.

Tottenham came close to title glory last season, but they crumbled in their final few games and effectively handed the crown to unlikely champions Leicester City.

There is a fine balance among the team at the moment. They hold the second-best defensive record in the top flight this season behind Chelsea after conceding 16 and keeping nine clean sheets in 22 games.

At the other end of the pitch, Spurs are fourth in the list of top scorers after netting 45 goals, which is six fewer than Liverpool, who are currently leading the way.

Kane is also just two strikes behind individual top scorers Diego Costa and Alexis Sanchez, both of whom are on 14.

Given the progress that Tottenham have made over the last few seasons, Kane believes that the club need to keep the current squad together.

In an interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, Kane said:

“I would be surprised if any of my team-mates were to leave now. Something’s going on here, we’re just missing that last step – to win trophies. It would be stupid to leave now.”
