Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been targeted to replace Thibault Courtois at Atletico Madrid, Daily Star reports.
Courtois – who is currently on loan at Atletico – is wanted back at Chelsea and the Spanish side have started their search in the case he does depart.
And Diego Simeone has set his sights on Liverpool keeper Pepe Reina, who is at the moment playing at Napoli on loan.
However the Spanish international wants to return to his home country for family reasons, with his agent already holding talks with Atletico for a possible move.
Reina has two years left on his contract, but a release clause of £4.1m could see him leave sooner rather than later.
The 31-year-old would need to accept a pay cut in order for the move to happen, which could derail negotiations.
Barcelona, who have also lost Victor Valdes to a long-term injury, were favorites for his signature but a possible FIFA transfer ban could make it impossible.
Interestingly, Reina’s father played for the Madrid side in the 1970s and Pepe could very well follow suit.
Diego Simeone’s team are currently on top of the La Liga table, as well as in the UEFA Champions League semi-final.
