Liverpool are set to make a bid for Chelsea’s Ryan Bertrand after the unlikelihood of landing Alberto Moreno, Express reports.
The Reds have been pursuing Sevilla defender Moreno for some time, but are now ready to give up the chase after Tottenham and Real Madrid have emerged as competition.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers will therefore turn to Bertrand, who he coached in Chelsea’s youth ranks while at Stamford Bridge.
Bertrand was on loan at Aston Vila last term and performed admirably, making him the Reds’ number one defensive target.
The Anfield club have also been linked with Ajax’s Daley Blind and Wolfsburg’s Ricardo Rodriguez, with Liverpool desperate to sign a left-back this summer.
It was thought that Ashley Cole’s departure from Chelsea would open the door for Bertrand to gain a starting berth, but the Blues are closing in on Atletico Madrid’s Filipe Luis, limiting his first-team chances.
And Rodgers will look to take advantage of his lack of regular playing time in order to lure the Englishman to Merseyside.
