Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers is set for January disappointment as their move for former Reds star Xabi Alonso has been scuppered by the midfielder agreeing a new deal at Real Madrid, according to the Metro.
Alonso was expected to be the subject of numerous bids in January after failing to finalise a new contract in the Spanish capital but it now appears that the 32 year old has sealed the deal.
The Spanish international is out of contract in the summer and so was hoping for a move in the new year with former club Liverpool being a likely destination.
Alonso is still considered a legend by Reds fans and it took the club a while to get over his loss in midfield and partnership with Steven Gerrard.
The new contract with Madrid could Alonso end his career with the club and despite the numerous midfield signings in recent years, he is still one of the first names on the team sheet.
