Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has stated that his side is better than Manchester United, as they prepare for their big clash against Barcelona on Tuesday, BBC reports.
The former Malaga manager took into account Manchester United’s past successes, but City’s performance in the current campaign means his team have surpassed their city rivals.
“If we only consider this season, there is just one club in Manchester and it is ours,” he said.
“But you cannot forget what United have done.
“We are aiming to keep growing by winning many trophies – not just national but international trophies.”
At the moment, the Citizens are fighting on all four fronts. They’re third in the Premier League table, trailing leaders Chelsea by three points with a game in hand, facing Barcelona in the last sixteen of the Champions League, quarterfinals of the FA Cup, and have reached the Capital One Cup Final.
On the other hand, the Red Devils have already been knocked out of both domestic cups and lie seventh in the English Premier League. They also face Greek side Olympiakos in the last 16 of the Champions League.
Pellegrini will be without star forward Sergio Aguero for the Barcelona game, but says Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho could return from his injury.
“It is a good test. It is important,” Pellegrini said about the match. “But I don’t think it is the most important thing because we are just in the round of 16.
“We can beat Barcelona and maybe in the next round you can have defeat. This club is trying to develop those areas.
“So far we have had a good season and we must finish that way. One of our targets is to continue in the Champions League knowing we play against the most important club in the world.”
