Manchester City star Vicent Kompany believes that competition for regular first-team places have helped the club in their fine start to the season, according to report from the Daily Star.

City continued their brilliant form with a 2-0 victory over Everton on Sunday, putting them top of the Premier League table with nine points.

In their first three games, they’ve scored eight goals while conceding none.

It was a busy summer for the Sky Blues, with manager Manuel Pellegrini bringing in Patrick Roberts, Nicolas Otamendi, Fabian Delph, and Raheem Sterling in the transfer window.

But they’re not done yet, with Wolfsburg star Kevin de Bruyne also being eyed by the Citizens.

And club captain Kompany is adamant that with everyone’s position under threat, it has forced each player to up their game this season.

"Competition is one of the reasons we have started so strong,” he said.

"You can't really afford to do anything wrong during the week leading up to the game.

"Then during the game, you can't do anything wrong either as there is always someone looking over your shoulder, waiting, who is just as good as you.

"If they are in a better moment and they deserve a chance, they will take your place.

"You have got to be at the top of your game.

"This is what you are seeing, a group of guys who know that they need to perform. If they don't, someone else will."

The Belgium international added that even he is under pressure following the £32million signing of Otamendi, but it is all for the good of the club.

"It is so important in any top team to have quality players all over.

"The extra competition is good, really good. You don't play for a top team unless you have that.

"If you look at the schedule, you could end up with 50 or 60 games and that is impossible for one team.

"If you want to go for every trophy, we have got Denayer, Demichelis, Otamendi, Mangala and myself. You need that to go for it."

City will hope to continue their winning streak when they host newly-promoted Watford at the Etihad this weekend.
