Manchester City are looking to hijack Didier Drogba’s transfer to Chelsea with a shock late bid, Daily Star reports.
Sky Blues striker Alvaro Negredo has been ruled out for the start of the new season with a broken metatarsal, leaving manager Manuel Pellegrini desperate to sign a suitable replacement.
Negredo is expected to be sidelined for four months, and it is reported that the Chilean boss will turn to Didier Drogba.
The Ivory Coast international is close to a return to former club Chelsea after leaving Turkish side Galatasaray at the end of the season.
Currently a free agent, the 36-year-old is considering his options and Man City expected to offer a lucrative 12-month contract to lure over the former Blues star.
Drogba is considered a Chelsea legend after helping the club to their first ever Champions League trophy back in 2012, levelling the final with a late header and scoring the winning penalty in a shoot-out against Bayern Munich.
Pellegrini sees Drogba as the perfect fill-in for the injured Negredo, who flew back to England from Kansas where City are on their pre-season tour.
