With defence Van Gaal’s priority, the Dutch boss is still keen to bring in a defender and possibly an anchorman before he allows several of his players to depart.

United have just completed the £59.7m capture of Real Madrid winger Angel di Maria, with Van Gaal revealing there are more signings to come.

“The club will [announce] when the time’s there,” he said.

“Players will leave, others will come.”

United have been chasing Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal all summer, but with the Chilean expected to stay with the Italian champions, Sporting Lisbon’s William Carvalho and AC Milan’s Nigel de Jong have emerged as alternative targets.

Van Gaal is also keen on Dutch defender Daley Blind, who is valued at £20million by Ajax Amsterdam.
