Sporting Lisbon have told Manchester United that William Carvalho is free to join the Red Devils this summer, if they can meet his £37million buy-out clause, Express reports.
Man United have recently been in negotiations over the transfer of the Portuguese midfielder, with boss Louis van Gaal keen on pairing him with new signing Ander Herrera in centre-midfield.
Carvalho’s impressive season last year with Sporting has earned him rave reviews, with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho also interested in the 22-year-old.
The Blues have made bids to lure him over to Stamford Bridge, but it is Man United who have the upper hand having signed Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani from Sporting previously.
He will however not come cheap, with Sporting director Augusto Ignacio clear he wants to keep his prized assets.
“It’s not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price,” he said.
“We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives, who will want to play as well.
“The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.
“It is not easy to negotiate for players, you need to be very shrewd but Sporting have a president who knows how to negotiate with anyone and what is best for the club.”
Carvalho made 30 appearances for Sporting Lisbon last season, scoring four goals.
