Another World Cup match came down to penalties once more as Argentina secured a place in the finals against Brazil. Both teams had their fair share of chances, but were unable to capitalize from some great defensive work.
It took quite a while before either side managed to find ways to break down a very solid defence, with Gonzalo Higuain coming very close on the 75th minute mark but saw the ball hit the side netting rather than the back of the goal.
Netherland almost booked their place in the finals when star man Arjen Robben skipped pass the Argentine defence before taking one touch too many and then seeing Javier Mascherano make one of the most important blocks of the night.
Goalless up until the 120th minute, this semi-final had to come down to penalties as the search for a winner continues. Argentina’s Sergio Romero denied both Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder before Maxi Rodriguez dealt the final blow to end match in favour of the South Americans with a 4-2 penalty score line.
